Day 3: Second Day of Chimpanzee Trekking & Exploration
Day 4: Departure from Gombe Stream National Park
Your chimpanzee adventure begins in Kigoma, a historic town on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. From Kigoma, you’ll take a boat transfer to Gombe Stream National Park, famous for the pioneering chimpanzee research of Jane Goodall.
The park is a narrow strip of land along the lake, with forested hills that are home to one of Africa’s most well-studied chimpanzee populations.
After arriving at your lodge or tented camp, enjoy a lakeside lunch and a relaxing afternoon. You can take a nature walk along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, spot some of the park’s other wildlife, or take a refreshing swim.
Dinner will be served at the lodge, where you’ll spend the night listening to the calming sounds of the forest.
After breakfast, set out on your first chimpanzee trek in the lush forests of Gombe Stream National Park. Accompanied by an experienced park guide, you’ll hike through the steep, densely forested slopes in search of one of the park’s chimpanzee families.
The trek may take a few hours, depending on the location of the chimps, but the sight of these playful and social creatures in their natural habitat will be unforgettable. Spend an hour with them, observing their interactions and unique personalities.
After your trek, return to camp for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, you can take part in optional activities, such as a boat ride on Lake Tanganyika, or explore nearby waterfalls and other scenic spots. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Today you’ll embark on another chimpanzee trek, offering the opportunity to further explore the park and deepen your experience with these fascinating creatures.
Gombe’s landscape is rugged, but the reward of seeing chimpanzees in the wild makes every step worthwhile. As you trek through the forest, you’ll also have the chance to spot other primates, such as colobus monkeys and olive baboons, as well as a variety of birds and butterflies.
After the trek, return to camp for lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing by the lake or taking a guided walk to learn more about Gombe’s ecology and history. Enjoy your final evening in Gombe with a lakeside dinner under the stars.
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxing morning at your lodge or take a short walk along the lake’s shoreline. You’ll then board a boat back to Kigoma, where you’ll catch your onward flight.
If time permits, you can visit the Jane Goodall Museum in Kigoma or take a brief city tour before heading to the airport.
Your Gombe chimpanzee safari concludes with wonderful memories of your up-close encounters with one of humankind’s closest relatives.
